Waxhaw Baseball Commissioner Updates

Commissioner's Note - December 23, 2021

Waxhaw Baseball Families,

As we get ready to start up registration for the Spring 2021 Baseball Season in March 2022, I wanted to pass along some important information and updates.

I am happy to say that our registration fees for the Spring will only increase $10 for most divisions from our Fall costs ($20 increase for 16U and 18U Babe Ruth). We were able to keep our increased registration cost very moderate despite an increase in cost for this Spring for umpires, uniforms, materials, field maintenance, and the general expense of having 2 more REC games per player than we had in the Fall.

We will be, however, increasing our work bond fee from $50 to $75 to encourage more volunteer participation either on field work days or in concessions (we will need more help with concessions than we had in the Fall). We have had a lot of feedback, though, regarding coaches and the amount of hours they volunteer so we have changed our policy on reimbursing work bond fees for our coaches. We will fully refund the work bond fee for head coaches this Spring and will provide a $25 discount for assistant coaches. This will also help out with the cost of the background check/coach abuse prevention training for our coaches.

Please register for REC baseball early. Registrations are now OPEN. We anticipate a record amount of registrations and with limited fields, I’m afraid we may end up having to close down some divisions early. Details for Challenge & Travel & Babe Ruth Registration will come later this winter. Please be sure to monitor our email, Commissioner's Notes and Social for updates.

The weekend of 2/18 will be evaluations for Rookies, Minors and Majors with practices starting for all age groups the week of 2/21 (except Babe Ruth, which starts later in the Spring). We anticipate the season will start with games on 3/19 or the week of 3/21.

For uniforms, we will provide as a league a hat, jersey, belt, and socks. Pants will be on the families to purchase separately. Something we will do different this season as an experiment is to allow the head coaches, once teams are formed, to pick what color pants they want to match their jerseys. Most coaches will probably pick the standard grey, but this will give a little variety to our league this coming season.

Some updates on improvements at the fields are as follows.

  • We anticipate 2 new batting cages will be installed at Nesbit 1 (big field) that those playing on field 1 and field 4 can use, leaving the cages at Nesbit 2 and 3 to be used by teams using 2 and 3 only.
  • The town is installing Electric Vehicle charging stations at Nesbit.
  • We are ordering new mounds for Nesbit 1 and 4 and Waxhaw Elementary 1, as well as new bullpen mounds.
  • We are replacing the fencing at Waxhaw Elementary 4 (T-ball) and putting back permanent fencing around that field.
  • Long term projects include permanent lights at Nesbit 2 and 3 (with help from the town), and permanent fencing at Kensington 6 (T-ball).

There are still some needs for our organization as far as help. Our Grounds Commissioners, Jeff and Sam, have both stepped down from their roles after many, many years of service. We owe them a ton of gratitude for all the countless hours they’ve spent volunteering for our organization. We’ve decided to create 2 new roles to help fill those big shoes. One would be a mechanic “on call” to help repair and fix any issues with our machines (gator, sand-pro, irrigation, etc…). The other would be someone to prepare the fields before games Mon.-Thu. and early Sat AM to take some of the labor work off of our coaches, as well as to drag, edge, etc… during the week all fields. Both of these roles could ultimately be paid part time positions. If you are interested please let me know and we can set up a call to chat about the role(s).

That’s all for now, get ready for the steady barrage of emails and notifications from myself and our baseball board as we get closer to kicking off our Spring 2022 season. As always, please don’t hesitate to reach out with any questions.

Happy and (especially these days) Healthy Holidays to you and your family!

Commissioner's Note - August 23, 2021

Hello Waxhaw Baseball Families,

As our Fall season is getting underway, and students returning to the classroom, we wanted to review with all of our families and coaches the protocol for what to do if a child/coach tests positive for Covid-19, or if they were exposed to someone with Covid-19.

If a child/coach tests positive, but has no symptoms, they should follow the CDC rules and remain away for 10 days. If you have symptoms, you should stay away longer (consult your healthcare professional).

If a child or coach is exposed to someone with COVID (within 6 feet for 15 min) we are recommending they stay away from the fields for 10 days before coming back, or if they have a negative test taken after 5 days of being exposed they can come back.

We are also recommending the coaches notify their teams there was a case so parents can keep watch on the health of their child. If two or more players/coaches test positive at the same time and we can identify it was at the field where they probably contracted the virus we'll shut down that team for 10 days.

This obviously can change based on CDC guidelines, but we're basically following the CDC and the NC Board of Health guidelines.

We will not be enforcing anything or requiring parents to show us a negative COVID result, as we're not medical experts. This will be on our parents and coaches to self-police.

Given this is an outside sport where the kids aren't on top of each other for 15 straight minutes within 6 feet (CDC guidelines for contact) we're pretty confident if we go with these guidelines we're going to be safe.

Any questions please don't hesitate to reach out. Hopefully we have a safe and fun Fall 2021 Waxhaw Baseball season!

Commissioner's Note - June 29, 2021

Good evening, Waxhaw Baseball Families,

Hope everyone is having a great start to their Summer!

By now you should have received notice either on email or saw posts on our social media pages (please follow them if you don't already on Facebook and Instagram) that Fall Baseball registration is open (except for Babe Ruth, which will open soon). Please go to the new website WXWAthletics.org to register  your child to play and/or for yourself coach. Information on dates in August and September for evaluations, practices beginning, and games beginning are there also at WXWAthletics.com/WXWBaseball.

It's also the time of the year where I get a lot of questions on Travel Ball and Challenge Ball. Unlike the Spring, in the Fall a player who is interested in a higher level of competition is not required to play rec baseball. They can try out for our Challenge program (more information on dates soon). We also will have some age groups who will hold tryouts for Travel and that information will also be out soon.

Speaking of Travel ball, I often get asked my opinion of Travel only ball, whether here at Waxhaw Baseball (which we introduced for a few age groups in the last year), or outside local Travel organizations. Please do not hesitate to reach out to me with any questions and I will give you my honest opinions/recommendations based on a lot of experience (I've got 4 boys ages 11-22, of which all 4 played for travel ball and/or Challenge teams). I do like the fact we are offering in a few age groups the more competitive Travel ball only option, and I am very familiar with many of the local organizations and can give you feedback if you had a question on a particular travel team if I'm aware of them (some great, some awful, some average at best). The reason we created a Travel only program here at Waxhaw was to prevent some of our better talent in-house at a more reasonable alternative to must costlier outside Travel team, and we've been very successful so far. Please don't hesitate to reach out with any questions or if you're looking into that route for your child and/or are on the fence.

On a related note, we have created a position on the Waxhaw Baseball Committee of a Travel/Challenge/All Star Coordinator, Tony Melendez has offered to champion this role. He has many years of baseball coaching experience also and if you wanted to reach out to him with any questions please feel free to email me and I'll pass his info along to you. Besides coaching a Babe Ruth team, he is also our 11U Travel Heat team coach this Fall.

Anyway, it's All Star Season, and we have for the first time 6 All Star Teams heading to States this weekend (6U, 7U, 8U, 9U, 10U, and 11U), and that number will increase once Babe Ruth All Stars start in a few weeks. Let's wish them all well and Go Waxhaw!!!
