MICRO SOCCER: AGE GROUPS U4 & U5

Micro Soccer provides an introduction to the game of soccer in a positive, engaging, and non-competitive atmosphere.  At this level, our youngest players learn basic soccer skills while developing their gross motor skills and coordination. Players are encouraged to have multiple touches on the ball through fun skill-building games. They are introduced to soccer while making new friends and most of all, having FUN! All Micro coaches are parent volunteers. We strongly encourage all parents to be involved in our soccer program through volunteerism.

MICRO SOCCER: AGE GROUPS U4 & U5

We have adapted the small-sided game approach for this age group which is recommended by US Youth Soccer.

  • Small-sided games (3v3) allow more opportunities to touch the ball and be involved in play.
  • There are no Goalkeepers at the MICRO level in order to encourage all players on the field to stay involved and promote goal-scoring, which helps build player confidence.
  • At this level, we focus on individual skill development vs. wins and losses.
  • MICRO provides our players with an introduction to skills and experience needed to progress into our more competitive leagues in future seasons.

Ages

  • MICRO 1 (U4):  Birth Year 2021
  • MICRO 2 (U5):  Birth Year 2020

To be clear, there will be no overlap between 2021 and 2020 birthdays on teams. Each birth year has its own division.

NEW FOR FALL 2024: Parents now have the ability to register players for one(1) specific day of the week and time, based on birth year placement, rather than providing a single day unavailable. This will streamline volunteer coach recruiting, team building and setting practice times.

There are many updates to the Fall 2024 registration process. Please read the entire page before starting your registration. - WXW Soccer Club

Philosophy and Objectives

The Waxhaw approach to soccer education at this age focuses on developing a love of soccer.  At these ages, happiness is the most important achievement. However, Waxhaw fully intends to develop skill, balance and coordination, positive socialization, and early leadership skills.

  • Soccer Education:  1 ball, 1 player
  • Technical activities are disguised as fun, imaginative, role-playing activities
  • Emphasis consists of dribbling-starting, stopping, changing directions, and varying speeds
  • Passing into a net, passing/striking the ball into open spaces and nets will be game driven
  • Games will include problem-solving, teamwork, individual expression, and goal-setting
